Another Reason to be Ashamed of Myself
It's petty... it's judgemental... it has absolutely nothing whatever to do with me... but Prince Charles is representing the British royal family at the funeral for the Pope? Not that my credentials are any better than his, but... I'm not going!

Yeah, to my mind there is an issue of... worthiness? I know that, at heart, John Paul II probably saw himself as just a guy, a simple priest; but if the royal family had someone to send who hadn't ruined a marriage through adultery it would've been nice. Prince William maybe?
There is something so wrong with me setting myself up as the morality police though...
I don't mean to be critical. But, when are we Americans going to remember that we fought a war to get away from the Mother Country, England? We worry way to much about the Royal Family. I have to disagree with you, I see nothing wrong with him going. Yeah, he may have "broken up" a Marriage, but, that's not going to hurt anything at a funeral.
As for the below post, I agree with you. When I was A Drill Sgt, I would tell my "trainees" they better think before they do, there are conseqeunces for their actions, they could be stuck with someone the next 18 years of their life.
You're right, Appalachian. In the pantheon of things that mean absolutely nothing to me, the British royal family is front and center. It's just one of those things... among a horde of people walking down the street you see someone in a clown suit and you wonder aloud, "what the heck?..."
I'm neither British nor Catholic, and it occurs to me that I didn't vote for the American representatives to the funeral either.
Having said all that, regarding John Paul II, may he rest in peace.
You may not be going to the Pope's funeral, but George W. is - the first American president ever to attend a pope's funeral. How's that for separation of church and state...
